Principal's Message

 

Hello Klahowya Families and Students,

 

We are grateful for community support in passing the school support replacement levy. This support will continue our efforts to ensure our grounds and schools are safe and welcoming. We also will continue to offer after school activities, music and sports opportunities to our students. We thank you for your support!

 

The month of May is designated Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Month. This year’s theme is Advancing Leaders Through Innovation. Klahowya joins the rest of the nation in honoring and celebrating the many contributions and rich heritage of our AANHPI community. 

 

May 6-10 is Teacher Appreciation Week. We will be celebrating our teachers all week with treats and lunch. Please join us in celebrating our terrific certificated staff!

 

As mentioned last week, some of our High School students will take the AP Test for their advanced placement courses during May 6-16. Additionally, in the middle of May, students in grades 6,7,8,10 and 11 will take the Smarter Balanced Assessment. During these time periods it will be important for students to be well rested and to have a charged chromebook. Please see more information below in the newsletter.

Monday, May 6, we have an evening welcome event for incoming 6th grade students and families (current 5th graders). This event is from 6:00-7:00 p.m. in our auditorium and will feature information about our school and programs. PTSA will have the Scholastic Book Fair set up and will be continuing the Book Fair through Friday the 10th from 9:30-2:45 p.m. in room 136.

Attendance/Tardies/Early Dismissals

Early Dismissal

Send a note with your student stating the time of dismissal, reason and name of person who will be picking up student. Student should, when possible, arrange for dismissal through the Attendance Office before school starts.  Otherwise, we ask for at LEAST 30 minutes notice.  Remember that the weather is getting nicer, and classes go outside. Calling ahead will avoid trying to track down a student that might be at lunch, an assembly or outside for PE. Students who do not check out through attendance are TRUANT.

Extended Absences (3 or more days)

If your student will be gone for an extended period, please notify the Attendance Office at least two weeks in advance and the Attendance Office will provide a form for the student to take around to their teachers.  We understand that emergencies may occur. Please have your student correspond with their teachers via Google Classroom regarding work. ~ Ms. T. Attendance Secretary

 

BACCALAUREATE - SENIOR PARENTS

Save June 9, 2pm for your graduate's baccalaureate. Baccalaureate is an open, non-denominational, inspirational service for all graduating seniors. This service is parent sponsored, not school or district. This years Klahowya Baccalaureate will be held at Newlife Training Center, 9923 Poplars Ave NW, Silverdale.

 

BACCALAUREATE - CALLING ALL SENIORS

All are welcome to attend baccalaureate. If you would like to perform at baccalaureate, auditions will be May 28th in the auditorium from 2:45-3:45. We are looking for artists, musicians, vocalists, student speakers and/or any student who wants to have a say in this year’s Baccalaureate. Baccalaureate is an open, non-denominational, inspirational service for all graduating seniors where you’ll get to showcase and bless others with your talents. This service is parent sponsored, not school or district.

 

Talent Show

Can you sing? Dance? Play an instrument? Do you have a hidden talent? It's time for you to show Klahowya your talent at our upcoming Talent Show! Auditions will be held on Friday, May 10th after school in the auditorium. Auditions are open to all grades 6th through 12th grade. Come prepared with your act and all materials needed. *Seniors, this is your last chance to show your talents off. Come out for auditions! The Talent Show will be held on Friday, May 17th at 6:00PM. American Sign Language Team Placed 4th At State

Klahowya's American Sign Language (ASL) Team placed 4th at State. They brought home 13 awards! Nice job students! 

Advanced Placement Testing

Hello AP Students. AP Testing is next week from May 6th-May 16th. Please visit our website for more information. This information is also posted in your Google Classrooms. Attached is an important letter for your convenience. If you are taking an afternoon exam and riding a bus home, you will need to arrange transportation as the afternoon exams usually do not end prior to the bus departure. Please stop by the bookkeeper or go online to pay for the AP Course fees ASAP if you have not done so yet. Click here.

National History Day Competition

Congratulations to all 7th and 8th graders who competed last weekend at the National History Day competition in Kirkland. CKSD is Looking for 24-25 Student Representatives to the Board of Directors 

The Central Kitsap Board of Directors has created a non-voting, advisory board position for up to two Student Representatives enrolled in a Central Kitsap School District High School.The CKSD Board of Directors recognizes the value of student representation on the school board so that student voice and input is included in the board’s work. Students, please fill out the attached form if you are interested in this postion. The applications are due May 31st.

Class of 2028 News

It’s just over a month until Klahowya’s first ever 8th Grade Dance on June 7, 7-9 P.M.  The Dance–open only to 8th grade students– is intended to be fun and celebratory, marking the transition from Middle School to High School. You can help make this inaugural event special, and help cover the cost of the D.J. and refreshments, by supporting the Class of 2028 in the following ways:

• Purchase special “Class of 2028” T-shirts, hoodies, and stickers. You can buy a t-shirt or hoodie in either black (the 8th grade school color) or white (the 9th grade school color). Or, grab one of each! Youth Mental Health First Aid

Special announcement from Kitsap Strong! Based on the recommendations of our Youth Leadership Team (students representing 10 local high schools), we've teamed up with WSU Extension, PCHS, KMHS, and KPHD to offer two free training sessions in  Youth Mental Health First Aid  - Saturday, May 11th and Wednesday, May 29th, 10-4:30 pm. This comprehensive training will teach community members how to identify, understand, and respond to signs of mental health and substance use challenges among adolescents ages 12-18. It's ideal for educators, coaches, parents, and mentors.
