Principal's Message

 

Hello Klahowya Families and Students,

 

It is hard to believe, but we are about to enter the month of May! This is a busy month for our school. May 3rd is designated as a day to celebrate our school lunch workers. May 6-10 is also Teacher Appreciation Week. Please join us in these celebrations!

 

Some of our High School students will take the AP Test for their advanced placement courses during May 6-16. Additionally, in the middle of May, students in grades 6,7,8,10 and 11 will take the Smarter Balanced Assessment. During these time periods it will be important for students to be well rested and to have a charged chromebook. Please see more information below in the newsletter.

 

Monday, May 6, we have an evening welcome event for incoming 6th grade students and families (current 5th graders). This event is from 6:00-7:00 p.m. in our auditorium and will feature information about our school and programs. PTSA will have the Scholastic Book Fair set up and will be continuing the Book Fair through Friday the 10th from 7:30-3:00 p.m. in room 136.

Attendance/Tardies/Early Dismissals

Early Dismissal

Send a note with the student stating time of dismissal, reason, and name of person who will be picking up student. We ask for at least 30 minutes to get your student. The weather is getting nicer, and classes are going outside. Students should, when possible, arrange for dismissal through the Attendance Office before school starts. This will avoid trying to track down a student that might be at lunch, an assembly or in P.E.

Students who become ill during school need to call home from the Attendance Office. If students do not check out through Attendance this is considered truancy.

Extended Absences (3 or more days)

If your student will be gone for an extended period, please notify the Attendance Office at least two weeks in advance and the Attendance Office will provide a form for the student to take around to their teachers.  We understand that emergencies may occur. Please have your student correspond with their teachers via Google Classroom regarding work. ~ Ms. T. Attendance Secretary

Advanced Placement Testing

Hello AP Students! AP Testing is right around the corner from May 6th - May 16th. Please visit our website for more information. This information is also posted in your Google Classrooms. Attached is an important letter for your convenience. If you are taking an afternoon exam and riding a bus home, you will need to arrange transportation as the afternoon exams usually do not end prior to the bus departure. Please stop by the bookkeeper or go online to pay for the AP Course fees ASAP if you have not done so yet. High School Math Team State Championship

Klahowya’s High School Math Team added another State Championship to the list on Saturday, April 20th when Carter Rickabaugh and Quinn Rogers took first place in the Division II Team Problem.  Congratulations to all 11 members of the High School Math Team who traveled to Central Washington University and represented Klahowya so well at the WSMC State Math Competition:  Franklin Morgan, Carter Rickabaugh, Thatcher Wise, Kierstin Youtsey, Draven Cook, Drew Franklin, Quinn Rogers, Matthew Stone, Myles Peterson, Thomas Tetreault, and Will Schweitzer.

 

Sports Medicine State Competition Placement

Sports Medicine Students placed 12th overall as a team out of 27 schools at the State Sports Medicine Competition. Maddie McComb placed 12th out of 98 students in her testing category (1st Aid & CPR).

CKSD is Looking for 24-25 Student Representatives to the Board of Directors 

The Central Kitsap Board of Directors has created a non-voting, advisory board position for up to two Student Representatives enrolled in a Central Kitsap School District High School.The CKSD Board of Directors recognizes the value of student representation on the school board so that student voice and input is included in the board’s work. Students, please fill out the attached form if you are interested in this postion.

Vaping Prevention

Dear Klahowya Families,

 

On May 2nd and 3rd we will be providing vaping prevention presentations to 8th and 9th grade students. The presentation will be held during English classes and will educate students on the risks of vaping, introduce refusal skills, and provide resources. Vaping can put students at risk for nicotine addiction, harm their brain development, and become a barrier to their learning.

Summer School

• PE courses MUST BE started by June 3.
• Students taking a PE course are not able to enroll in any other courses
• Registration closes on July 12. 

Youth Mental Health First Aid

Special announcement from Kitsap Strong! Based on the recommendations of our Youth Leadership Team (students representing 10 local high schools), we've teamed up with WSU Extension, PCHS, KMHS, and KPHD to offer two free training sessions in  Youth Mental Health First Aid  - Saturday, May 11th and Wednesday, May 29th, 10-4:30 pm. This comprehensive training will teach community members how to identify, understand, and respond to signs of mental health and substance use challenges among adolescents ages 12-18. It's ideal for educators, coaches, parents, and mentors. 

NEW Middle School 7th Grade Immunization Requirement

This is a notice to all current 6th grade families. All students entering 7th grade must have received a Tdap booster on or after 10 years of age or have an exemption form on file before the first day of school.  If you need an appointment with a provider, schedule it now; wait times can be lengthy.  If your student needs a sports physical, your provider may be able to give the Tdap booster at the same time.  Call your school office or school nurse with any questions. High School And Middle School Athletics
