Principal's Message

 

Hello Klahowya Families and Students,

 

Klahowya hosted the Middle School Cross Country Jamboree this week. A few hundred students from over 6 schools attended! There are a lot of Spring sports happening, be sure to visit our school events calendar and come watch our talented athletes.

 

As mentioned in the previous newsletter, our 8-11 grade students have completed course registration for the 24-25 school year. Next week our 6th and 7th grade classes will input their course selections. You will be able to check PowerSchool to review your students course selections once they have registered. Have your student log in on the far left side of the screen and choose “Class Registration”. Their 24/25 schedule requests should appear. If for some reason your student missed registration, we will be holding registration make-ups.  

 

Cooking and Community Clubs annual Small Things Drive is underway. Ms. Steedman and her students are collecting unused toiletries from April 8th-19th. See more information below. All items will go to our CK Food Bank.

Attendance/Tardies/Early Dismissals

Attendance is the concept of people, individually or as a group, appearing at a location for a previously scheduled event. Measuring attendance is a significant concern for many organizations which can use such information to gauge the effectiveness of their efforts and to plan for future efforts. Wikipedia

Early Dismissal

Please send a note with the student stating time of dismissal, reason, and name of person who will be picking up the student. Students should, when possible, arrange for dismissal through the Attendance Office before school starts. Now that the weather is getting nicer, we ask that you give us at least 30 minutes to get your student(s) up front.  This will avoid trying to track down a student that might be at lunch, an assembly, or in P.E.

Students who become ill during school, need to call home from the Attendance Office and/or the nurse’s office. If students do not check out through Attendance this is considered truancy, Ms. T. your attendance secretary. [email protected]

 

Spring Theater Auditions

Klahowya Drama Club is holding auditions for the Spring One-Act Festival. Klahowya is partnering with Olympic High School and Central Kitsap High School to bring a District-wide One-Act Play Festival, held at the Central Kitsap Performing Arts Center (CKPAC) in May! 

 

Auditions will be held in the auditorium on Wednesday, April 17th after school until 3:30pm. Middle School and High School aged students are both invited to attend. Students will be reading from the scripts and will not need to prepare anything for auditions.  

 

We will be reading from 3-4 short plays that Klahowya will perform for the festival. For more information, contact Mrs. McAuley at [email protected].

Yearbooks Are On Sale Now!

YEARBOOKS available for purchase beginning April 1st, until we run out.  Get yours before they’re gone.  Purchases can be made at the bookkeeper’s window or online using the following instructions.  Cost is $50.

Scholarship Newsletter

Please see this week’s Scholarship Newsletter for information on scholarships, financial aid, and colleges. The Klahowya Foundation Scholarship is now open.

 

KSS Running Start Info Sessions

• Have you considered applying to Olympic College's Running Start program for 2024-2025?
• Are you a current 10th or 11th grader who is on track with high school credits?
• Do you have a cumulative GPA of at least 2.5 - 3.0?

If you answered YES to each of these questions, please attend one of the KSS Running Start information sessions that will be held on the following dates in Room 125.

• APR 17
• APR 19

Counselors will provide students with an overview and answer your questions. 

Prior to your session, please be sure to complete the following application steps to make the most of your experience.

1. Review Olympic College's "Running Start New Students" page.

2. Apply to OC using your legal name, and list "Running Start" as your "Student Type."

3. Setup a Parchment account using your personal email address to obtain a transcript.

 

Course Selection for 2024-25 School Year

• Current 8-11th graders, please turn in your signed AP Forms to the SSC.
• Parents, you are able to view your student’s course selections in your student’s PowerSchool.

• Course Selection sheets were handed out to 6th and 7th graders this week.  Counselors have been available at lunch for questions.  Students will be submitting their course selections into PowerSchool on the following dates. Please ensure you have looked over and signed your student’s course selection sheet. 

  APR 16 - Current 6th grade

  APR 17 - Current 7th grade 

Summer School

• PE courses MUST BE started by June 3.
• Students taking a PE course are not able to enroll in any other courses
• Registration closes on July 12. 

Horizon Air Summer Intern Program

The Horizon Air summer internship program gives high school students the opportunity to see the day-to-day operation of the Maintenance & Engineering and Flight Operations divisions at Horizon Air.  These amazing internships are open to our students because of our district’s partnership with Horizon Air and Alaska Airlines!  ALL INTERNS WILL BE PAID. Applications opened APR 8. Sign up right away for information directly from Horizon Air Group. Must be 16 by JUN 1, 2024.

April is "Month of the Military Child"! 

In 1986, April was designated Month of the Military Child by Secretary of Defense Casper Weinberger. Since that time, military communities around the world have recognized military children for their contributions and unique needs. 

 

Our nation’s service members do not serve alone. Alongside many of them are the 1,602,261 brave military children, youth and teens who make significant contributions for the country while dealing with uncertainty and concern for their parents. We pay tribute to these extraordinary children, youth and teens by designating the month of April to thank and support them — focusing on the unique and invaluable role they play — and ensuring that they have access to the support and resources they need.

 

PURPLE UP: 

The color purple — known by the military community to symbolize all services united — is used during April to show support and thank military children, youth and teens for their strength and sacrifices. Many places around the country and world have adopted the practice of lighting up, decorating with, and wearing purple to bring community awareness and celebration of military-connected children.

Youth Mental Health First Aid

Special announcement from Kitsap Strong! Based on the recommendations of our Youth Leadership Team (students representing 10 local high schools), we've teamed up with WSU Extension, PCHS, KMHS, and KPHD to offer two free training sessions in  Youth Mental Health First Aid  - Saturday, May 11th and Wednesday, May 29th, 10-4:30 pm. This comprehensive training will teach community members how to identify, understand, and respond to signs of mental health and substance use challenges among adolescents ages 12-18. It's ideal for educators, coaches, parents, and mentors.
