Principal's Message
Hello Klahowya Families and Students, 

 

Monday, January 15th is a Federal holiday observing Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. There is no school on Monday. We will be honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on Tuesday the 16th in Academy classrooms. Students will remain in their assigned Academy class and will listen to a presentation from the AWSL (Association of Washington Student Leaders) where James Layman will give a short presentation. Klahowya staff will then facilitate a conversation with their Academy class. Some of you may remember James from a couple of years ago when he came to Klahowya and did a couple of assemblies with our students. His presentation serves as a call to action for students to look out for each other, it also focuses on belonging, hope, and seeing humanity in others. 

 

As mentioned last week, we are planning on running two sessions of Saturday school in January to help increase student achievement for middle school and high school students the first semester. We encourage students to attend to study individually or in groups to get assistance with remaining classwork. All students are welcome. See more information below.

 

Cold weather is here. Please keep in mind that weather conditions could result in changes to school or bus schedules. In inclement weather, we will announce changes by 6 a.m. Soon after, we communicate with families. If you don't hear from us, it means schools and buses are operating normally. Attendance/Tardies/Early Dismissals

What are three reasons why attendance is important?

• Regular attendance fosters a classroom community between teachers and children.

KSS Saturday School 

We are planning on running two sessions of Saturday School in January. Saturday School supports students with increasing academic achievement and helps support students with end of semester finals. This year we are opening Saturday School to both High School and Middle School students. Snacks will be provided at each session.

 

When: Saturday, January 20th and January 27th 8:30 am - 11:30 am

Where: Klahowya Secondary School

Why: Saturday School is a great opportunity for students to:

• Study in small groups for AP Semester Finals
• Complete group projects for Magnet Courses
• Complete missing or incomplete assignments
• Complete test/quiz retakes in a supervised setting

All students are welcome to join us at Saturday School. See you then.

 

Peninsula Community Health Vaccine Clinic

PCHS is hosting a vaccine clinic at our Silverdale Children's Clinic on January 13th from 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.

Kitsap Public Health Department Free Vaccine Clinics

Kitsap Public Health Department is offering immunization clinics at the end of this month on January 23rd, January 24th, and January 25th. The Kitsap County Care-A-Van will be providing vaccinations regardless of insurance status. Please see the attached flyers. 8th Grade Only Dance June 7th, 2024

We are excited to announce that on June 7th, 2024, Klahowya will be hosting our first ever 8th grade only dance.This will be a fun opportunity for the Class of 2028 to celebrate the end of Middle School. The plan is for an evening event with a live D.J. It will be a free event for all 8th graders. 

 

Because this is a new event, we are looking to form a Parent/Family Planning Group. This group would help plan the event, assist with fundraising, and help with decorations and set-up. If you are interested in joining this group, or would like more information, please contact Middle School ASB Advisor Leigh Hampton at: [email protected]. We have also established a Class of 2028 fundraising page. High School Winter Formal January 19, 2024

The High School Winter Formal is on January 19th from 7-10 p.m. This dance is open to all Klahowya 9th-12th graders. Tickets for the Winter Formal are now on sale at the bookkeeper's office! $12 with ASB and $15 without ASB. All guest passes are $15 and there are a limited amount available! Forms are available at the bookkeeper's window and in your Google Classroom.

 

Klahowya Performing Arts Parents Association (KPAPA)

We are looking for parents that are interested in being involved with performing arts at KSS. Do you have a student who is in choir or likes to perform in the talent shows or in theater productions? We would love it if you volunteered with KPAPA! There are so many opportunities to help and it is very rewarding when you see the students perform knowing that you had a part in it. Please consider coming to our next meeting at KSS in the choir room on January 18th at 6 p.m. Email Mandy Watland or Maggie Haydock for more details.

Financial Aid Night and FAFSA

Seniors and Senior Families, the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) opened on DEC 31.  We encourage all seniors to fill out the FAFSA as soon as possible at https://studentaid.gov/h/apply-for-aid/fafsa  

 

Klahowya will be hosting a Financial Aid night on JAN 24 at 6:30pm in the Klahowya commons. Come learn about Financial Aid for college as well as receive assistance with the FAFSA.  If you plan on filling out the FAFSA at this meeting, please bring the following:

Kitsap County Summer Help Positions

Applications for Kitsap County Public Works' Summer Employment Program are now open.  Applicants must be 18 years old by May 1, 2024, and the season is May - September 30. 

Many CKSD students have worked for Kitsap County during their summers after graduation, it’s a GREAT summer job for college kids and/or those figuring out their next steps.  The county can be flexible with start and end dates to accommodate for school schedules.  Apply here.

 

Klahowya Foundation Scholarship Fund

Klahowya Community, do you belong to a business or civic group that is looking for ways to make a difference?

 

We are actively seeking funds to build our scholarship program again this year and we are asking for your support. Scholarship awards, of any amount, will help Klahowya seniors continue with post-secondary education in colleges, universities and technical schools.

 

Businesses, civic groups and individuals contributing to our scholarship fund will be listed on our Graduation Commencement Program. In addition, a gift of $250 or more will be listed as a specific scholarship carrying the name of the contributor. Your donation is important to us.

West Sound Tech “Explore Your Future”

10th and 11th graders, come out to the Explore Your Future free community event on February 26th from 5-7 pm at the Kitsap Pavilion. (Please note that this is an updated date and place). Experience what WST classes are offered, talk to current students, meet prospective employers and learn about YOUR post-secondary options including 2-year, 4-year schools, technical schools, apprenticeships, military, and more. Receive an early registration code to register before open enrollment begins. Please note that there will be no WST Summer School this year due to construction. 

 

WSU Native American Youth Sports Summit February 4th, 2024

Native American Programs and Washington State University Cougar Athletics are excited to invite Native American middle and high school students in grades 6-12 to campus for the Native American Youth Sports Summit. 

During this FREE 1-day event, students will:

• Tour the WSU Pullman campus
• Connect with WSU student athletes
• See what WSU has to offer to Native American students
• Attend a WSU women's basketball game

• All activities, meals, and game tickets are provided to registrants at no cost.

Two Senior Yearbook Deadlines 

First deadline, the senior photos deadline has been extended to January 26th. Photos can be uploaded using your computer or the Yearbook Snap app (instructions below).

With your computer, go to www.yearbookforever.com, click on Community Upload, search for Klahowya, enter our code Eagles, and upload your photo.  Choose “Portrait” as the photo type and enter the requested information to submit.  Please submit only one photo.  With your cell phone, download the free Yearbook Snap app from the App Store or Google Play. Then search for Klahowya, enter our code Eagles, and follow the directions to upload your photos. Choose “Portrait” as the photo type and enter the requested information to submit. 

If no senior portrait is turned in, we will use the school photo taken by the school photographer. If no photo was captured, students will not appear in the yearbook.  

 

Second deadline, senior memory page purchase deadline is Sunday, January 21st.

All submissions for memory pages (photos, text, etc.) will be due February 11, 2024. Any ads purchased but not submitted by this deadline will be forfeited.  We understand these ads are very important to students and parents alike, and the yearbook staff wants to make them as special as possible for both! However, there are many things to consider. These ads are to send messages and share memories with graduating students in their final yearbook. Once your ad is designed, a proof will be sent to you for final approval. You will have five (5) days to respond with any corrections. Please keep in mind that we may not be able to use all the photos submitted. Each photo should be at least 300 dpi or higher to ensure prints are of the highest quality. Images must also be submitted digitally. Photos that are deemed unacceptable will not be used. If you have any questions or concerns feel free to contact the yearbook adviser, Ms. Shaw at [email protected].

 

Ad prices are as follows: Quarter page is $50, half page is $100, and full page is $150.

PSNS Workstudy
Juniors, if you are interested in applying for the PSNS Work Study Program, please book an appointment with Mr. Miles at JamesMiles.YouCanBook.Me so you can start your USA Jobs application. Please bring your cell phone, personal email address and password to your appointment. 

 

Senior Morphs
Seniors! Have you sent in your Senior Morph for the Senior Morph video that will be unveiled during the Moving Up Assembly in June? We need four photos from you including a baby photo, an elementary photo, a middle school photo and a senior photo. It is best if these are in JPG format, but TIFF and PNG work as well. To have the highest quality morph, make sure your head is roughly the same size in each picture, you are alone in the photo and it is high quality. (Typically, these photos should each be larger than 1 MB in size. 2 MB or higher is preferred.) Make sure you label each photo with your first and last name!!!

This is all due by Friday February 23rd. If you don't submit by then, you run the risk of not being in the Senior Morph Video. Click on this link.
