A Message from Principal McDaniel

Hello Klahowya Students and Families,

As we enter the final weeks of school, I would like to begin by thanking you for your collaboration, effort and perseverance. We know that this year has been unusual and difficult, and we appreciate your help! We are excited to return to normal schedule with full school days at Klahowya for the fall!

Warmer spring weather often reminds me that the school year is coming to a close. For all our students, now is the time to take a look at academic progress and to get those final assignments in. The term is ending soon!

Warmer spring weather also reminds me that we often have staff transitioning to and from the building. This year, I am sad to announce that both of our amazing Assistant Principals have taken positions at other schools. Next year Meghan Rubman will be an Assistant Principal at Fairview Middle School and John Malich will be an Assistant Principal at South Kitsap High School. We thank Mrs. Rubman and Mr. Malich for their contributions to our school! We appreciate you and are honored to have you as a part of the Klahowya family.

Over the last few weeks, our hiring team has spent countless hours reviewing candidates for our Assistant Principal positions. Pending School Board Approval, please join me in welcoming and congratulating Christopher Franklin and Catherine Lewis as our new Assistant Principals for Klahowya!

Christopher Franklin comes to us from the Pullman community where he has been serving students at Pullman High School as their Assistant Principal for the past 6 years. Chris also serves as the District CTE Director and the District Athletic Director. Prior to that, Chris served the North Kitsap community as an Athletic Director at North Kitsap High School for four years and as their Sports Medicine Instructor/Head Athletic Trainer and teacher. Chris has a Bachelor of Arts in Sports Medicine, Physical Education and K-12 Education. He holds a Principal Certificate from Gonzaga University and a CTE Director Administrator certificate from Central Washington University.

Catherine Lewis joins us from the North Kitsap community where she currently teaches students at Wolfle Elementary. Catherine interned this year at their Options Program PK-8. She has a certification as an ALICE trainer and has been trained at the Yale Institute on RULER for Social Emotional Learning. She has just completed her Administrative Program from Western Washington University. Catherine also holds a Masters In Science Education from Walden University and a Bachelors in Science majoring in Special Education from Western Washington University.

As the spring progresses, there will be additional staff changes. We will do our best to keep you updated through our newsletter each week. We hope you have a successful end to the 2020-21 school year!

Thank You,

Scott McDaniel

A Note from Attendance

Students who will be leaving early for Summer Break will need to get a “School Absence” form from Attendance. This will allow them to be able to return their books to the Library prior to their assigned textbook return date and will also help them to schedule their finals early.
Parents may call the Attendance Office 360-662-4031, send an email to jodyd@ckschools.org or send a note with their student specifying the date of the student’s last day at school. This needs to be done at least 5 days before the student’s last day.

Wellness Corner

Psychological transitions are focused around mental health and behavior. It is moving from your typical to something different when a life change occurs. This could be depression after childbirth. It could be grief after a death. It could be anxiety after a traumatic event. It could be the move from mania to depression for people living with Bipolar Disorder. Your mental health status changes. When mental health changes, your behavior changes. This can be a quick and big change OR it can be a slow change that you don't even know is happening. Let's talk about how we can manage these transitions a little better.
