A message from Principal McDaniel

Hello Klahowya Students and Families,

With the recent announcement regarding the return of students to school, I want you to know that our staff is excited to welcome YOU (our students) back to the nest! We miss having students in our halls and look forward to your return to campus.

We know that you likely have a few questions regarding what school will look like when you return. Over the next several weeks we will send out additional information over email, information will be posted in the daily announcements, we will post videos for students and families and will have a couple of opportunities to talk with our admin team. Please check your email next week for additional information on these opportunities.

Just like you, we are looking forward to hearing the grade levels that will be selected to return to our school following the School Board meeting next week.

We are extremely excited to see you return to school and we know that this will be an exciting Spring!

Thank you,
Scott McDaniel

Mindset is everything. Have you heard that? It has been shown to be the case in so many different events. You've heard of people lifting cars off of loved ones. You've heard of a 13 year old creating symphonies. How is that possible? All are examples of a growth mindset. A mind with no boundaries. A mind being creative as it can imagine. A mind telling itself, "This is hard, but I'll figure it out if I keep trying." A mind telling itself, "I can't do this...YET." Do you want to be like that? Have less boundaries that hold you back from doing things you want to do. Do you want your kid to be like that? How do we get and keep a growth mindset? Let's talk.

1 in 5 youth experience a mental health disorder. Nearly 50% of those disorders go undiagnosed and untreated. Recent studies show a high correlation between untreated mental health disorders and substance use. The self-medication theory is a major part of co-occurring disorders in substance using individuals. Youth and adults with unmet mental health needs are at higher risk for substance abuse. ( teenmentalhealth.org , Nami )( Smith et al, 2017 )

Klahowya Secondary School wants to destigmatize mental health. We have staff that can refer students to adequate substance and mental health treatment depending on their individual needs in a confidential manner.

If you believe your student is experiencing mental health or substance use issues, reaching out for help is the first step to recovery.

You can contact the Student Assistance Professional, Alixaundrea Poli to evaluate a plan that works best for you and your student. ( alixaundreap@ckschools.org/360.519-4133 )

Please read the Scholarship news update for all the new Senior information! Also, some of you still have not submitted your senior photo. Ms. Shaw has extended the deadline to March 9th, but after that she will no longer be accepting them. I have included the link below to upload your photo If you have any questions regarding your photo please contact Ms.Shaw.
