A message from Principal McDaniel

Hello Klahowya Students and Families,

Can you believe that May is here? With only a few short weeks until the end of the year, this is the moment to check on academic progress. As a reminder to all our students and families, you can check current grades by accessing PowerSchool for your student. If you have any questions on how to end the year strongly, please talk with your student's teacher for guidance.

As a reminder to all families, school ends at 1:15 each day, and activity buses leave the school at 2:15 pm. Academic Support and Clubs run from 1:15-2:15 pm on each day that students attend.

  • A list of after school support and activities can be found HERE .
  • Before attending the afternoon sessions, each day we would like students to sign up for their activities HERE.
  • If you are looking for more information on transportation, you can find it HERE .

We wish you the best as we close out the school year. More information will be out next week regarding upcoming events for incoming 5th graders and our graduating seniors.

Have a great weekend!

Scott McDaniel

Wellness Corner

I'm guessing we aren't the only ones who use this term. Peace out is what we say when we are leaving. In this case we're talking about when your kids finally decide, sometimes with a push from you, to move out of the family home. Some kids are very excited to leave home and be on their own. No adults. No bedtime. No having to clean if they don't want to. It can be a glorious time. As Eleanor Roosevelt said, with freedom comes responsibility. Let's help prepare our kids to be responsible AND have fun. Sound a little nerdy? Probably. Setting them up for success is always the best move (pun intended).

Peace Out (CKSD Family Wellness Site Link)

The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), found that Adderall (stimulant) and Cannabis (Cannabinoids) were the two lowest perceived risk of use among teens. SAMSHA (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration) recently started tracking data in 2018 for substance related emergency room department visits. The main leading substances involved in Emergency Department visits were Stimulants and Cannabinoids. This data shows that these two substances are more harmful than perceived for teens. ( NIDA, 2014 ) ( SAMSHA, 2020 )

If you feel you need to discuss more about the signs and symptoms of substance use or need resources, please contact the Student Assistance Professional, Alixaundrea Poli ( alixaundreap@ckschools.org/360-519-4133 ) .
