Unit 2—CCOT introduction

Analyze the economic & social changes and continuities in India from classical times (Ch. 9) to the post classical time (Ch. 16).

  1. Analyze the question

Be sure you “AP” Address the Prompt; All Parts; Understand the “directive terms”

what’s “analyze” mean:

Analyze: Determine the nature and relationship of the component parts of; explain; break down.
Tell "how", "why" something happened. It is like "cause and effect".—so WHY is something the same or WHY did it change

Address All parts of the prompt:

Essay type: ccot (both change & continuity)

Place: India

Time: Classical (500 BCE -600 CE) to Post Classical (600-1450 CE)

Categories to analyze: economics & social

Changes AND CONTINUTIY ( a continuity is something that is there at the beginning, the middle and the end—the whole time)

Take a Stand/Make an Argument  (think of this—when you write a thesis—go to the “BAR”—make sure you have the Background (all the stuff in the question about time, places, categories etc—you address the prompt) and  that you make an Argument: AP world is about taking a stand—don’t restate the prompt—make some sort of analysis—how, why, which was more important etc. then you provide a “Roadmap”—I should be able to read your thesis—get a sense of how you will organize your essay and then skim through your topic sentences to see that they follow this “roadmap”

Here your “stand or argument could be why—why the change or why more changes or that there were more economic than social changes or . . .

NOT enough that there were big changes—

  1. Collect and sort information Content brainstorm

start at 500 BCE (or the time frame discussed in Ch. 9) what was it like?  At 1000 CE (or time frame from Ch. 16) what was it like?—see chart next page

  1. Think about how to organize (because thesis should preview)

Social and then economic?

Early and then later?

Change and then cont?

  1. Develop your thesis

          Remember, a  thesis:

  • Addresses the Prompt, all parts
  • Takes a stand
  • reviews your argument (organization)

For a CCOT you need to qualify the changes and continuities

Could be BAR (see above)

In ____place_______ from  __date_____ to ___date_______, _________ changed from __________ to ____________ to __________b/c _________, while _________ stayed the same.

Example Thesis: If question looked at CCOT in Egypt.

Barely ok

From 10, 000 BCE to 2500 BCE the agricultural revolution resulted in radical economic change in the Nile River valley, however continuities persisted in social structures as women’s status was still determined by the role they played as mother.

ok

From 10000 BCE to 2500 BCE the surpluses made possible by the agricultural revolution created tremendous social changes in the Nile River valley as societies moved from relatively egalitarian communities to those with increasing class and gender distinctions and also yielded dramatic economic changes as job specialization and trade intensified. However, economies continued to be dependent on the natural environment and women’s roles as mothers continued to be prominent.
