Hello Klahowya Eagles,

The start of school is only 5 days away and we are excited to see your student in class next week!

As promised, here is the first of our weekly newsletters:

Student schedule availability

Unfortunately, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, our district has faced many challenges this summer. After asking our families their preference of learning models, we needed time to move students (and staff) to our virtual academy. As a result of these moves, we needed to make significant changes to our class schedule. This means that the release of student schedules has been delayed while we complete this work. We truly appreciate your patience… we want to get this information out to you as soon as possible!

Through PowerSchool, students and parents will be able to access students’ schedules on either Monday, August 31st or Tuesday, September 1st. We will open up access to schedules as soon as they are complete. Students will also be able to view their schedules in PowerSchool through their CKSD Classlink site.

Google Classroom Access

Our goal is to give families a consistent time and place to find plans and assignments. This will help you to be informed and help your student with their learning schedules and routines.

All students will be enrolled in their Google Classrooms prior to the first day of school.

  • There is a google classroom for each period
  • To access each class, students will login on their chromebooks and go to classlink. Once there, they should click on “Google Classroom”
  • Early next week, parents will also receive a welcome email with a course code to each of their student’s classes.

Starting September 4th: By the end of each Friday, all teachers will post their learning plans for the following week to their Google Classroom (including class schedule, instructions, assignments, announcements, and resources).

Academy at Klahowya

At Klahowya, we will utilize Academy/Advisory to connect with our students and to teach skills that address their social and emotional needs. This is a time for students to engage with their peers, their teacher and form positive bonds. The goal is to help them feel connected to their peers and connected to our community while we are socially distant.

Students in grades 6- 8 will complete activities to help them develop social skills, using the Second Step curriculum. Students in grades 9-12 will complete district lessons that will help students become more productive and successful learners and will also give them a half credit for full year completion.

First Three Days of School

Due to the pandemic, the first week of school will look very different from our usual start. Our staff is excited to meet your student and we can’t wait for the first day of school!

  • On Wednesday, September 2nd- All students are encouraged to attend a Google Meet with their Academy/Advisory teacher from 12:30-1:15 pm. Academy is an important place where students will build relationships and friendships. Our staff is excited to get to know your student and will act as a mentor for them during this year!
  • On Thursday, September 3rd- All students are encouraged to attend Google Meets with periods 1, 3 and 5. The Google Meet for Period 1 begins at 9:00 am, Period 3 begins at 10:00 am, and period 5 begins at 12:30 pm.
  • On Friday, September 4th- All students are encouraged to attend Google Meets with periods 2, 4, and 6. The Google Meet for Period 2 begins at 9:00am, Period 4 begins at 10:00 am, and period 6 begins at 12:30 pm.

As a reminder, a day of remote learning will include around 30 minutes of independent work for each Middle School Class and around 40 minutes of work for each High School class. (Approximately 3-4 hours of daily work in Google Classrooms).  In addition to this, teachers will be available daily via Google Meets to answer questions and to build relationships with students.

Please use this Family Reopening Guide link for much more information and a larger view of the schedule table below.

Process for student attendance

With classes taking place in a virtual format, attendance will look very different this year. Students will be able to be marked present, if they connect with their teachers, interact with their classes or collaborate with their peers. Your child will be marked PRESENT if they attend the Google Meet, e-mail or correspond with teachers, submit work or interact in some way with the teachers or complete assignments for the class.

Attendance will be taken daily by 2:30pm. Students will be marked as being in attendance if they have demonstrated participation since the last time the class was scheduled.

Examples of participation include:

  • Work in Google Classroom
  • Interactions with teacher via e-mail or by phone
  • Attendance in a Google Meet
  • Evidence of participation in a task or assignment
