Hello Klahowya Eagles!

Your health and safety is our number one priority, so on behalf of our staff I would like to first wish you and your loved ones well. As the most critical partner and advocate of your students we understand your need for information from us to help your children have a successful school year. We appreciate your patience. The staff at Klahowya Secondary School hopes your family had a safe and healthy summer! We miss all of you and look forward to building and continuing a strong relationship with you and your family.

Starting this Friday, August 28th, you should expect weekly communication from Klahowya with as much information as we can provide to keep you informed on our academic programs and student support systems.

Student schedule availability

Unfortunately, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, our district has faced many challenges this summer. After asking our families their preference of learning models, we needed time to move students (and staff) to our virtual academy. As a result of these moves, we needed to make significant changes to our class schedule. This means that the release of student schedules has been delayed while we complete this work. We truly appreciate your patience… we want to get this information out to you as soon as possible!

Through PowerSchool, students and parents will be able to access students’ schedules on either Monday, August 31st or Tuesday, September 1st. We will open up access to schedules as soon as they are complete. Students will also be able to view their schedules in PowerSchool through their CKSD Classlink site.

Klahowya daily/weekly schedule for remote learning

Our staff has been working hard to learn how to make videos of themselves providing instruction for learning activities. By creating our own instructional videos, we can tailor our instruction to our school and student needs. Additionally, recorded videos give students and families tremendous flexibility on the pace and place that students complete their work.

Videos also help us solve a tremendous challenge… We know that up to 30% of our families have limited internet availability or bandwidth. To help increase access to learning opportunities, we have developed a system using portable thumb drives where students will still be able to access electronic instructional videos and assignments. More information will be available on this support in our next newsletter.

A day of remote learning will include around three hours of time online, as well as independent assignments and activities. Teachers will be available daily via Google Meets for individual support. The schedule (below) will be the same for all middle and high schools. The first half of the day (8:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.) will include live Google Meets and some work time. The second half (1:15 - 3:00 p.m.) will be independent work time where students can work on assignments, watch learning videos, etc. Students will attend their 1st, 3rd and 5th period classes on Mondays and Thursdays. They will attend their 2nd, 4th and 6th period classes on Tuesdays and Fridays.

Please use this Family Reopening Guide link for much more information and a larger view of the schedule table below.

Plan and organization of student work

Starting September 4th: By the end of each Friday, all teachers will post their learning plans for the following week to their Google Classroom (including class schedule, instructions, assignments, announcements, and resources). Our goal is to give families a consistent time and place to find plans and assignments that will give you the opportunity to stay informed and help you students with their learning schedules and routines.

Performance based courses

We intend to offer as many of our traditional performance based classes (PE, Music, Art, etc.) as possible. Along with all other courses, teachers of traditional performance based classes will also post lessons, activities, and other resources to their Google Classrooms each Friday.
