6-Women in American Society:

 

  1. Women in early colonial times:
  2. Women were particularly vital as producers of cloth - they spun flax and wool into thread, and wove it into cloth, and they would make the family's clothing as well.

 

  1. In charge of the poultry and the dairy, they did the milking, made butter and cheese, and sold their surplus dairy produce, eggs, etc, so contributed to the family economy.

 

  1. Young girls were often married by the age of 13 or 14 and if women weren’t married by the age of 25, it was socially humiliating

 

  1. Women’s role in the Revolutionary War:
  2. In 1766, “Sons of Liberty” and “Daughters of Liberty” started to appear throughout the country. Right away, the Daughters of Liberty was very active.

 

  1. Women also wrote pieces in the local newspapers about the war, held scrap drives and even made cartridges.

 

  1. After the war was over and the government began to write laws and the Constitution. Women began to focus on changing the common law of total male superiority.

  1. Even though it is only recently that women have been permitted to hold official roles in many religions, they have always been central to American religious life.

  1. Largest religious women's organization in the United States: The Relief Society (Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints), founded in 1842. It is also one of the largest women's organizations in the world.

 

  1. Key Events of the women's right movement:
  2. 1848-The first women's rights convention is held in Seneca Falls, New York. After 2 days of discussion and debate, 68 women and 32 men sign a Declaration of Sentiments, which outlines grievances and sets the agenda for the women's rights movement. A set of 12 resolutions is adopted calling for equal treatment of women and men under the law and voting rights for women.

 

  1. 1869-The territory of Wyoming passes the first women's suffrage law. The following year, women begin serving on juries in the territory.

 

  1. 1893-Colorado is the first state to adopt an amendment granting women the right to vote.

 

  1. 1920-The Women's Bureau of the Department of Labor is formed to collect information about women in the workforce and safeguard good working conditions for women

 

  1. 1920-The 19th Amendment to the Constitution, granting women the right to vote
